Changes to pharmacy regulation

Information about the establishment of the new regulator

This section includes information on the background to the GPhC, the development of standards and its governance arrangements. You will also find details of the Council's Chair and members and a timeline showing key milestones.

This is an interim stage in the development of pharmacy regulation, responsibility for which will rest with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) until the GPhC is launched in 2010, parliamentary timetable permitting. There is close working with the RPSGB to ensure a smooth transition of the regulatory functions to the GPhC.

The process to establish the GPhC

Consultation on the draft Pharmacy Order 2010, which establishes the role, functions and powers of the GPhC, was completed in March 2009. There remain several key stages to go through in the process of establishing the GPhC. In outline, these are (parliamentary timetable permitting):

  • statutory consultation on standards and rules
  • ensuring organisational readiness
