Vision for pharmacy regulation

The establishment of the GPhC is an opportunity to create a modern, responsive regulator of pharmacy. It will create confidence in the public and command the respect of the professions it regulates.

The GPhC will achieve this by:

  • being independent
  • having a strong public focus to ensure pharmacy is as safe as it can be
  • working to sustain and improve standards and quality of care
  • working with registrants to identify, address and learn from poor practice and behaviour
  • maintaining public confidence in the pharmacy profession.

There are several reasons why pharmacy regulation is changing. Principally, it will create the clear separation between regulation of the pharmacy professions and professional leadership that is required by government policy. It is also crucial that regulation has a clear public focus, especially as pharmacy professionals take on an increasing clinical role.

The GPhC will adopt a new approach to regulation, designed to support and facilitate the productive working lives of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, rather than being purely a means of discipline. This approach to regulation will not create unnecessary burdens, but will be proportionate to the risks it is designed to address.
