What the establishment of the new GPhC will mean for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy owners and employers
The GPhC aims to provide all pharmacy professionals with the support they need to meet their increased responsibilities and to practise safely and effectively. By setting clear standards and establishing a defined framework for pharmacy professionals, the GPhC will promote high-quality practice and ensure that all pharmacy professionals are working to promote public health, safety and wellbeing. There will be a greater focus on ensuring that regulation responds to changes in science, technology and policy.
Registering with the GPhC
From 2010, all pharmacists (including community, hospital, industrial and academic pharmacists, and pharmacy superintendents) and pharmacy technicians will be required to register with the GPhC. At the same time, the GPhC will introduce a framework for statutory continuing professional development (CPD) designed to ensure that all pharmacy professionals have the up-to-date knowledge and skills they need to deliver high-quality services throughout their working lives. This will bring the arrangements for pharmacy into line with those for other health professionals.
For more detail, see the information for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Changes for pharmacy owners and employers
Employers and managers of pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians will need to familiarise themselves with changes to pharmacy regulation that could affect their business and staff. From 2010, employers will be responsible for ensuring that relevant staff are registered with the GPhC. By 2012, owners will need to ensure that they meet the new standards for premises in order to ensure a high-quality environment for patients and professionals.
For more detail, see the information for pharmacy owners/employers.
Get involved
The GPhC is keen for all professionals to get involved in the development and running of the new organisation. A series of events, consultations and polls will be held in the run-up to the establishment of the GPhC. Stakeholders can also send in their feedback via this website.
