Registering as a pharmacy technician

The criteria to register as a pharmacy technician [PDF 747 KB] sets out the education, training and experience requirements you must meet to register as a pharmacy technician with the GPhC. If you want to practise as a pharmacy technician in England, Scotland and Wales, you must be registered with us.

Important information if you are applying for registration during the COVID-19 pandemic

We are still processing completed applications for initial registration as a pharmacy technician, but there may be some delays because we currently have limited access to any post sent to our offices.

We know that some trainees who have completed their training are experiencing challenges in obtaining certificates from course providers. We have arranged with course providers for them to send us their pass lists directly, so you do not need to provide certificates with your application at the moment.

We know that during lockdown some pharmacy technician pre-registration trainees are also facing challenges in having copies of their documents certified by a legal professional. You now have the following options when applying for registration:

  • get a copy of your passport or driving licence certified by a legal professional. Please look to see if you can find a solicitor or other legal professional who is still providing this service in-person or via video link
  • use the Post Office’s in-branch Document Certification Service to certify your passport or driving licence, if you cannot find a legal professional to certify your documents.

There is less flexibility in the law in relation to your birth certificate, and so you will still have to send a duplicate copy of your birth certificate provided by the General Registers Office, if you were born in Great Britain. You can order a copy of your birth certificate on the GOV.uk website. Applicants born outside Great Britain have to send a copy of their birth certificate which must be certified by a legal professional.

Once you have had your identity documents certified, please apply online, upload all documents to the portal and post your documents to our office address marked 'Pharmacy Technician Registration'. We are visiting our office regularly to collect and process our post.

Please do contact us via info@pharmacyregulation.org if you are still experiencing difficulties and we will do our best to advise you.

Which application should I use to register?

The information you will need to provide and the application form you need to fill in depends on where you completed your qualifications and work experience.

  • If you trained in the UK, you can register online using the myGPhC system; find out more
  • If you have trained or been registered as a pharmacy technician outside the UK, you must complete additional qualifications in the UK before you can apply to register. Find out more about applying to register.
