Racism in Pharmacy Follow Up Roundtable: “Accountability Counts”

Tuesday 10 October 2023, 11:00-12:30, virtual

Last year, we hosted a wide-ranging discussion about how racism manifests and affects pharmacy professionals and how this can have a resulting impact on patient care. In this further session, and as part of our follow-up commitments, we focused on accountability and Fitness to Practise, specifically how regulators can tackle over-representation of certain groups in regulatory processes and learn from others about how they have approached this.

This new series of equality focused roundtables and events is designed to shape our regulatory work, informed by the experiences of our stakeholders. This links directly to the commitments in our strategy to help tackle the different types of discrimination within pharmacy and to support an open and inclusive culture where pharmacy teams are empowered to meet their professional and legal obligations.

Language barriers and health inequalities roundtable

Monday 18 September, 15:00-16:30, virtual

We’ve recently started to host a series of equality focussed roundtables and events, to help shape our regulatory work, informed by the experiences our stakeholders. This links directly to the commitments in Delivering equality, improving diversity and fostering inclusion: Our strategy for change 2021-26 to help tackle the different types of discrimination within pharmacy and to support an open and inclusive culture where pharmacy teams are empowered to meet their professional and legal obligations.

Guest speakers at this event were:

  • Rebecca Curtayne, Public Affairs Lead, Healthwatch England who spoke on Lost for Words – Healthwatch Evidence on how language barriers contributes to health inequalities
  • Jay Patel, Regional Facilitator, Early Career Pharmacist Practice Team, School of Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation (NW), NHS England, who shared research into the experience of pharmacy professionals across sectors, when they encounter language barriers with patients

The discussion covered experiences of language barriers; how language barriers impacts on patients and on pharmacy professionals and how this can have a resulting impact on patient care; and identify any further actions that regulators, employers, professional bodies, trade bodies and education and training providers and others can take to help make sure that we take a co-ordinated approach to this important issue.
