Initial education and training for pharmacy technicians

Standards of initial education and training for pharmacy technicians set out the criteria against which we will approve education and training for pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians. The standards ensure that newly registered pharmacy technicians are competent to practise safely and effectively.

New standards

In October 2017 we published new standards for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians (also available in Welsh- cliciwch yma i ddarllen y ddogfen hon yn y Gymraeg).

Training providers are expected to design courses incorporating the new standards during 2018-2019, and offer courses based on the new standards from 2019.

The new standards emphasise person-centred professionalism, communication and team working, through the integration of learning and experience during the training.

We have also developed a draft evidence framework to support the creation of courses that will meet the new standards.

We’re seeking feedback on the draft evidence framework, which aims to help course providers, pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians and employers understand key concepts behind the learning outcomes set out in the standards.

You can give your views on the draft framework until 14 November 2017 by email to  education@pharmacyregulation.org
