Standards of initial education and training for pharmacy technicians set out the criteria against which we will approve education and training for pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians. The standards ensure that newly registered pharmacy technicians are competent to practise safely and effectively.
New standards
In October 2017 we published new standards for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians [PDF 714 KB] (also available in Welsh- cliciwch yma i ddarllen y ddogfen hon yn y Gymraeg). [PDF 729 KB]
The new standards emphasise person-centred professionalism, communication and team working, through the integration of learning and experience during the training.
Training providers are expected to design courses incorporating the new standards during 2018-2019, and offer courses based on the new standards from 2019.
Until new courses are ready, trainee pharmacy technicians can still enrol on existing ones, based on the previous standards for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians [PDF 1.76 MB], which will remain accredited by the GPhC for registration purposes.
Evidence framework
The evidence framework is designed to support course designers and developers as they write courses for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians. It also provides clarity for course providers, employers and pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians (trainees) about achieving certain learning outcomes within the standards for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians (the standards). It should be read alongside the standards in full.
