Applicants with non-UK pharmacy technician qualifications

If you have trained or been registered as a pharmacy technician in a country outside of the United Kingdom (UK), you must complete additional qualifications in the UK before you can apply to join the GPhC register.

You will also need to complete work experience.

If you want to register as a pharmacy technician in Great Britain, you must:

  • achieve the integrated, or linked, knowledge and competence qualification(s);
  • complete a minimum of two years’ work-based experience in the UK or meet alternative work-experience requirements;
  • apply for registration as a pharmacy technician within five calendar years of starting on a recognised course; OR within two years of completing the last recognised course, whichever is sooner.

In special circumstances, we will consider later applications if there are legitimate and documented reasons.

Assessment of qualifications

Your non-UK qualification(s) must be assessed by a UK training provider who will look at your existing qualification and identify any further training you would need to complete to meet the qualification requirements to join the register in Great Britain.

Work experience

Before applying to join the GPhC register, you will need to meet our work experience requirements and provide evidence.

If you don't have evidence of experience of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician qualification from a non-UK country:

  • you will need to complete a minimum of two years’ work experience in the UK;

  • your work experience must be under the supervision, direction or guidance of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to whom you are directly accountable for at least 14 hours per week.

If you do have evidence of experience of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician qualification from a non-UK country, and are eligible to practise as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician in the country where you qualified:

  • your work experience requirement may be reduced;
  • the amount of UK work experience you will need to take before applying to register will be determined by the assessment of your qualifications and experience by a UK training provider;
  • you will need to be employed as a trainee pharmacy technician in Great Britain while completing the additional training requirements determined by the UK training provider.

Steps to follow

Meet our training and work experience requirements by:

  • finding an approved provider of pharmacy technician education and training;
  • requesting an assessment of your qualifications and work experience by the provider;
  • completing any additional training modules and work experience, as recommended by the approved provider.

You can then apply to register as a pharmacy technican by:

  • including evidence of your qualifications and work experience from both inside and outside of the UK, as appropriate, when you submit your application to join the register.
