All you need to know to apply for and to sit the registration assessment in July 2021

Eligibility to sit
Applying to sit the assessment
If you meet the criteria above, you will be able to apply from Monday 10 May 2021 using the application form available on myGPhC. If you are not able to the view the application form on or after this date, but think you may be eligible to apply, please contact us.
You must submit your application to sit through my GPhC by Monday 31 May 2021.
Shortly after this deadline, if you are eligible to sit, we will confirm this by email.
Important: This confirmation you receive from us does not mean that you will automatically be entered to sit the assessment, even if you are eligible to do so. If you intend to sit, you must book a place through Pearson VUE..

Booking your sitting
You will sit the assessment at a Pearson Vue test centre, using the Pearson online system. There are over 200 centres across the UK.
There are sufficient test centre spaces across the UK to accommodate the number of candidates approved to sit. If you are not able to book an appointment in your preferred test centre location, you will need to select another test centre. See here for a list of reserved Pearson VUE test centres within the UK.
You will receive an email from the GPhC to alert you to expect a communication from Pearson VUE, approximately 24-48 hours before you receive the notification from them to create an account and book your assessment centre appointment. This email notification from Pearson VUE will advise you how to set up your Pearson VUE account and to book your assessment. You will not be able to set up your account before you have received this notification from Pearson.
Requesting a reasonable adjustment
If you have a specific need which you feel could disadvantage you when sitting the registration assessment, you can request a ‘reasonable adjustment’. You will need to identify your condition, provide evidence of your diagnosis from a suitably qualified professional, and tell us what adjustment you consider would mitigate your disadvantage.
You must submit your application form by Friday 7 May 2021. There is no process for dealing with late adjustment requests for this sitting.
If you have requested an adjustment for a previous sitting, you will need to apply again if you want to request an adjustment for this sitting, although you may be able to use your medical evidence again. Please read the guidance for more information.
If you receive the outcome of your adjustment request and want to appeal the decision that has been made, you can do this by completing and submitting an appeal form. You must return the form to us by Friday 25 June 2021.
Are you fit to sit?
It is very important that you only sit the registration assessment if you are fit to do so. Being ‘fit to sit’ means that you do not know of any reason why your performance would be adversely affected on the day of the assessment.
If you are aware of anything that might affect your performance on the day, you should not sit the assessment – even if it is a difficult decision to make. You are eligible to withdraw from a sitting at any time up until the assessment begins.
If you decide to withdraw, you must use the withdrawal form to notify us. If you do not, this could lead to you forfeiting one of your attempts at the registration assessment. If you chose to withdraw and not sit the assessment in July 2021, you must complete and submit a notification of withdrawal form by 5.00 pm on Thursday 5 August 2021. You must email your completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will not accept withdrawals by any other method.
Sitting the assessment outside of the UK
If you are currently living outside the UK and you are eligible to sit the July assessment, you have the option to sit remotely, at the same time as UK candidates and subject to the availability of places.
If you submit your application to sit the July assessment and have an overseas address on our records, we will contact you at the beginning of June to advise you of your options to sit the assessment, the actions you will need to complete, and the deadlines for these. Please make sure you update your address on myGPhC.
As a general rule, if you are living in a country with a time difference of two hours or less from the UK, we will arrange for you to sit in a test centre near where you live if Pearson VUE can accommodate this. If no centre is available, you will be able to sit the assessment remotely at a location of your choice.
If you are living in a country with over two hours’ time difference from the UK, you will only have the option to sit the assessment remotely, at a suitable location of your choice. To maintain the integrity of the assessment, all candidates taking the assessment remotely will be sitting at the same time as UK candidates.
If you are considering sitting remotely, it’s important to be aware that there are a limited number of slots available, and also potential challenges with sitting remotely. Please read the section below for more information.
Sitting the assessment remotely rather than in a test centre
Candidates sitting the July assessment sitting will be sitting in test centre where possible. However, if you have applied for, and are granted an adjustment to sit remotely via the adjustment panel, or if you are currently living in a county with a time difference of two hours or more from the UK, you will have the option to request to sit the assessment remotely.
However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to book a place for every candidate to sit the assessment remotely. There are a limited number of slots for remote sittings available on Pearson VUE, which are also used by Pearson’s many other clients.
It’s also important to stress the potential challenges you may face if you sit remotely. A significant number of remote sitters encounter problems with maintaining suitable testing conditions which are quiet and without interruptions, the reliability of technology and internet connections, and sitting during unsociable hours.
These issues are all outside the control of either Pearson VUE or the GPhC, and may mean that you cannot start or complete the assessment. There is very limited scope to rearrange another time slot for you to sit if you experience issues, due to the requirement for you to sit at the same time as other candidates.

You will be able to use calculators in part one of the registration assessment. You will need to bring your own calculator to the assessment. You must bring one of these models:
- Casio MX-8S-WE (This model is still permitted in the assessment although it is now discontinued)
- Casio MX 8B-WE / MX-8B
- Aurora HC133
- Aurora DT210

Frequently asked questions
- Why do we have to use whiteboards?
This is a standard Pearson VUE regulation that is implemented to uphold the integrity of the assessment. You will be provided with multi-sheet wipeable notepads. These look similar to paper notepads.
- Can we ask for extra notepads for our calculations?
Yes. More wipeable notepads will be made available to you if you need them. You will be able to retain the notepads you have during your assessment sitting.
- Can I bring my water bottle with me when I am having the exams?
Water must be in a clear bottle, which has your name written clearly on it. The bottle must be on the designated table just outside of the test room. You will be able to place it there as you enter the test room. If you need a drink during the sitting, you must raise your hand. A Test Administrator (TA) will then lock your computer and you will be permitted to walk to the designated table outside the test room and collect your bottle.
Please be advised that your exam timer will not be stopped for water or toilet breaks.
- What happens if I experience any issues (technical or otherwise) on the day?
If you have technical issues on the day your Pearson VUE invigilator will be on hand to assist you. If any issues arise during your assessment (technical or otherwise) you must let your invigilator know. They will be able to make a log of this. You must obtain a case reference number from the invigilator.
- I previously struggled to book a test centre near my home, what actions have been taken to prevent these issues occurring again?
We have reserved sufficient seats across the UK for candidates to book their test centre appointment. If you experience technical issues, you can contact Pearson VUE to help with your booking and the GPhC contact will also be able to assist if you are having difficulties too.

- When will I be able to book my assessment slot at Pearson VUE test centre?
All candidates will be given the opportunity to book an assessment slot before the end of June. You will receive an email from the GPhC to alert you to expect a communication from Pearson VUE, approximately 24-48 hours before you receive the notification from them to create an account and book your assessment centre appointment. This email notification from Pearson VUE will advise you how to set up your Pearson VUE account and to book your assessment. - I previously set up a Pearson VUE account with ORIEL, can I log back into this account to book my assessment slot?
No, you will need to set up a new Pearson VUE account to book an assessment slot for the GPhC registration assessment.
- Will we need to wear masks at Pearson Vue centres during the assessment if COVID restrictions are lifted before the date of assessment?
Yes. Please wear a mask to your test centre unless we have instructed you not to. You must bring and wear your own face mask while you’re at the test center and throughout your exam. A surgical or cloth face mask, including a homemade face mask, is acceptable as long as your nose and mouth are fully covered.
Please refer to the CDC, WHO, or your local health organization for best practices on choosing effective face masks. Face masks with exhalation valves and face shields are not acceptable. We are unable to provide face masks to candidates. Candidates without a face mask will be denied testing services.
- Will there be any questions related to COVID-19?
We will not be including questions related to COVID-19 in the July 2021 papers.
- Why does it take six weeks to receive our results?
It is a multi-step process that takes six weeks.
There are a number of steps to go through to ensure that you receive the correct result. The assessment performance data for all candidates must be analysed by our statisticians before being reviewed by our board of assessors. We must deal with requests for nullifications and any issues specific to the particular sitting before the board of assessors can confirm the pass marks. Then we have a quality assurance process to check that each candidate receives the correct result.
