Current weather conditions: putting patients first

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) recognises that extreme weather conditions forecast across Great Britain could present major challenges for all those affected, including pharmacies providing vital services to patients.

GPhC Chief Executive Duncan Rudkin commented:

“We appreciate that pharmacies in areas affected by extreme weather are continuing to provide patients and the public with safe pharmacy services in the face of significant obstacles.

“We recognise that in these exceptional conditions, some pharmacies may have to depart from their established procedures and find new ways to continue to provide services to patients. We would like to reassure those involved that we support pharmacies who are finding innovative ways to meet the needs of their patients, as long as services continue to be provided safely.

“We would urge pharmacies to take steps proactively to make sure that patients can continue to access the medicines and services they need; for example, keeping patients updated on any delays with the delivery of their medicines if relevant, and helping patients to obtain their medicines through alternative means if necessary.

“Our inspectors are available to offer advice to pharmacy professionals and pharmacy owners affected.”
