Marking the registration assessment

This year there will no longer be the option to have assessment results re-marked.

This is because the board of assessors has agreed to replace the current system of a single marking process followed by optional re-marking (for an extra charge), with a multi-stage checking process before results are agreed.

This rigorous new system has five stages. The first is carried out electronically, and is followed by four stages of checking by hand, if answers are unclear. This means that there will be five opportunities to make sure that the answers have been interpreted correctly.

All questions are answered by either selecting an option from a multiple choice question or by writing a number. This means that there are no written answers which involve markers having to make a judgement if an answer is correct. Remember to write on the answer paper as clearly as possible to avoid the need for checking by hand.

In addition to this process, candidate answer sheets will be sampled randomly after they have been marked electronically to make sure that the initial marking is accurate.

Also, at the end mark awarding process, a sample of the letters sent to candidates giving their results will be checked by hand to ensure they are correct.

In making this decision, the board was aware that the current re-marking fee was £110, and that no candidate's final result had ever been changed as the result of a re-mark.

Any candidate who fails the assessment has the right to appeal their result, as in previous sitting. We will provide more information about appealing assessment results in our guidance for unsuccessful candidates.
