New independent prescriber evidence framework

We have developed an evidence framework to accompany the recently revised set of standards for the education and training of pharmacist independent prescribers, published in January 2019.

The evidence framework aims to:

  • support independent prescribing (IP) course providers as they write programmes for the education and training of pharmacist independent prescribers
  • provide guidance to IP course providers on how they can demonstrate meeting each of the standards as part of our accreditation or reaccreditation process, and
  • provide clarity to pharmacist independent prescribers in training and their designated prescribing practitioners (DPPs) around achieving learning outcomes within the standards

Independed prescriber course providers were involved in the evidence framework development. We published the draft framework on our website for two weeks in March and invited IP course providers and IP accreditation members to provide feedback. We also held meetings with representatives of several IP course providers to make sure the evidence framework provides appropriate support to course providers when implementing the standards. We have considered and incorporated all feedback into the new framework before publication.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) is currently leading the development of a prescribing supervisor competency framework. IP course providers will be able to use that framework when working with their DPPs.
